Course Information | |||||||||||
Description | A survey of world literature from the ancient world to the present. Students will study works of prose, poetry, drama, and fiction in relation to their historical and cultural contexts. Texts will be selected from a diverse group of authors and traditions. | ||||||||||
Prerequisites | This course assumes a basic mastery of composition, including mastery of Standard American English grammar, usage, and mechanics. Must have taken English 1301 and 1302 and passed. | ||||||||||
Learning Outcomes |
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Identify key ideas, representative authors and works, significant historical or cultural events, and characteristic perspectives or attitudes expressed in the literature of different periods or regions. (PSLO 5, Alpha)measured by response paper rubric, Pre-test/Post-test. 2. Analyze literary works as expressions of individual or communal values within the social/ethical, political, cultural, or religious contexts of different literary periods.(PSLO 1,2,6)measured by class discussion & essay rubric. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the development of characteristic forms or styles of expression during different historical periods or in different regions.(PSLO 1,2,6) measured by essay rubric. 4. Write in a style that clearly communicates meaning, ethically builds credibility,& inspires belief and action.(PSLO 1,2,5,6)measured by essay rubric. |

You can access all assigned readings online for free, but I use the Norton Anthology to teach out of. Again, you can access everything online for free or you can order the book and follow along with me. The book information is below. ALL of the writing in this class must be written by the student enrolled in the class without any outside help. Link to Student Handbook section, page 30, on plagiarism: http://www.lamarpa.edu/Lamar/media/Lamar/Files/StudentHandBook.pdf Plagiarism means the appropriation of a work or idea from another person and the unacknowledged incorporation that work or idea into one's own work offered for credit. Collusion means the unauthorized collaboration with another person preparing work for credit. All essays will be submitted through Blackboard's Safe Assign link and a hard copy will also be submitted at the end of class. Plagiarism will result in a ZERO on the assignment the first offense. If there is a second offense, the student will FAIL the course. In Class Students: Students will be asked to leave the classroom immediately if caught texting/using a phone or smart watch while working on ANY class assignment. If caught twice, they will not be allowed to return. Phones should be placed on the upper left desk corner during class. Brief glancing is acceptable; reading the screen is not. No late work. No makeup work. MUST bring flash drive & readings to class EVERY TIME we meet. Students will have to write IN class, during class, and write each paper by themselves without outside help. If a student is caught plagiarizing the grade is a 0. There is NO makeup assignment for a plagiarized paper. If he/she is plagiarizes a second time, the student will be asked not to return and an F will be given for the final course grade. |
